Book The Mother I Could Have Been: A gripping and heartbreaking page turner Review :

I've now read three of Kerry Fisher's books, and this one is my favorite of the three. Here are the reasons I enjoyed this book so much:1. I thought the description of this book was a bit deceiving. As a mother myself, I thought the fact that a mother would make the conscious decision to leave her son would be unbelievable and leave me judging Vicky, the protagonist. My reactions were completely different, however. Not only did I understand Vicky leaving, my heart broke for her. And she doesn't just leave and disappear from the book (which the jacket description led me to believe). She is present throughout, and her thought process allows the reader to completely empathize with her and the horrible situation she is in.2. I love how Fisher intersects Vicky's and Caro's stories--not just physically, but on a mental/emotional level. They are both struggling as mothers, and the often complicated mother-daughter relationships are highlighted throughout. We get Vicky's perspective of her relationship with her mother, and we also get Caro's perspective of her relationship with her daughter. This helps the reader understand mother-daughter relationships from both a daughter's and a mother's points of view. It also helps the characters better understand one another.3. Fisher portrays the vacillating emotions of parenthood extremely well--going from pure joy to self-doubt in a matter of days, sometimes minutes. All of the characters were well-developed, and the emotions they felt and portrayed felt very real and very raw. Fisher even gives the unlikable characters (Vicky's mother-in-law and India) the opportunity to be understood.I think there is even enough untold parts to create a sequel, though I didn't feel it was unfinished. Most complicated relationships don't get tied into a tidy bow, so the ending was realistic for me.
Kerry Fisher has done it again. She has manifested another masterpiece in this heart-gripping, non-stop read. I lost count of the how many thought-filled lopsided smiles, laughs and tears I cried. With all of the different characters, Kerry draws you into the different facets of personalities, emotions and thoughts of each and every one of them. You really feel as if you are a part of their family! She made you feel as though you lived Vicky’s journey and marveled at the discovery of the importance not only family bonds but that of strangers that become family. There were moments when you felt as if you could identify your family dynamics and nod with feeling of acceptance and understanding (another thought-filled lopsided smile moment). Learning to accept the things you can’t change and how life experiences cause us to see things very differently from the way we initially perceived them. Most importantly to develop and cherish the relationships that we have with our loved ones while we still can.Well done Mrs. Fisher!A Most Appreciative Fan,YoYo
