I don't understand why this book gets so many 4 & 5 star reviews. The characters are flat and, other than Rew, I really could not care less about any one of them. Constant references about Rew's mysterious background just got annoying after a while: I stopped listening before I got far enough into it to found out what *that* was all about.Don't get me wrong: I liked the premise & I liked the main character, Rew. But, the story REALLY needed a beta reader. There were repetitious words & phrases like "she pushed back a dark lock of her dark hair." There were repetitive conversations, too: I lost count of how many times people said something to the effect of "Monsters/spellcasters/nobles are doing X, but why?"Also, some of the things they do just don't make any sense. At the beginning of the story, Rew sits staring at a fire waiting for the enemy to approach: it was night time. Staring at a fire destroys your night vision, no experienced warrior would face a fire at night while waiting for the enemy to approach: they wouldn't be able to see them in the dark. Later, he walked up slope in the mountains to reach a dry creek bed. Huh? Creek beds are at the bottom of valleys or ravines: you won't find a creek bed, dry or otherwise, high up on the slope of a mountain.Also, the world-building was too much. Rather than letting the back story come out more organically or weaving it into the story, there were repeated history "lessons" with long, drawn out soliloquies explaining some aspect of the political, magical or military history of the region. These huge info dumps just dragged the story down and about halfway through I had just had enough & I stopped listening to the book.I have loved Simon Vance's narration of other books, but he couldn't save this one for me. I returned the Audible title, but sadly, it was too late for me to return the Kindle book.All that said, this title might appeal to the Dungeons & Dragons aficionados. Hint: a "ranger" who knows magical cantrips & is one with the forest sounds suspiciously like the ranger class in DnD. Cobble has come up with another grand platform on which to build his adventure. (Spoiler alert) every generation the princes vie for the thrown and it's an epic battle to the death. To the winner goes the thrown. This is the background on which all the action takes place Rew our unlikely and unwilling hero, the Kings Ranger wants nothing to do with the intrigue and manipulation yet finds no matter what he does he gets dragged deeper and deeper into it. He's even stationed himself on the out reaches of the realm. Add a spell caster the children of a Baron, a petty thief (or is she?), a junior Ranger, some evil creates left over from prior battles and let the adventure begin. Plot twists are everywhere, as Rew fights the pull of the Investiture (the Princes battle). Everyone is more than seem or other than, or somehow a pawn in the game, and being moved by someone else's hand. It's chess on an epic scale, and Cobble is the master!
