Whoa...I have to be honest. I hadn’t heard of of this series until I saw the preview for the movie. I was so intrigued by the trailer I immediately downloaded all 5 books in the series. I read them 4 days. I couldn’t stop. Like, I tried to stop and I just couldn’t. I just finished the last one. Just now, while sitting the bathtub while the kids are out. I’m sobbing. How do I read something else now? This series was the most real, raw, gritty, truthful, honest, hurtful series I think I have ever read. Ever. It will stay with me for the rest of my life. Anna Todd wrote the most brilliant words I’ve read in the longest time. Where most stories are fantasy and struggles are quick to be overcome and the happily ever afters are so easy to achieve, she wrote the opposite. It was struggle and second-guessing and emotion on top of emotion, and cruelty, and love and it was just absolutely beautiful. I read the reviews and knew it would be all over the place with backstories that I don't care to know, but I bought it anyway. Shame on me. I finished the second book and decided I couldn't keep going on the roller coaster of a relationship the main characters had because it was never at a good place for more than a second. I was hoping this would be a Cliff Notes of sorts and give me the meat of book 3 and 4. I would pay the $11-$12 to read a version of After just from Hardin's POV, but definitely do not buy or read this unless you want to question your opinions of characters. I don't care what hardships or misgivings these people had before the first book. If it was that important it should have been included in the first book or fitted in with the story, not in a book that seems like a collection of deletions from the editor.One thing that stuck with me that I really didn't comprehend was Hardin sleeping with Natalie and defending himself because she wasn't a virgin. She was a virgin, slept with your mate, and a couple weeks later you sleep with her. ALL FOR A GAME. Pretty much still a virgin to knowing what the f*** is going on and now she's slept with two guys that care nothing for her.I'm so torn because the fantasy of it makes it alright for Tessa to fall for the troubled hot bad boy who wants to do good for her even though he can't really behave, then the reality of a relationship like this is too toxic for any of them to come out unscathed. Read the first book and pretend they come together in whatever scenario suits you best. Just don't go on to the next ones expecting rainbows and puppies. I really tried to read from the beginning, but found myself skipping through the entire thing to see what parts were going to make reading all of the nonsense worthwhile and it wasn't enough.
